Sacramento, California, the state capitol, also known as “The City of Trees,” attracts tourists from all over the world. Enjoy gourmet cuisine, unique architecture, and rich history around every corner and breathtaking nature view only a short drive away. During your stay, be sure to visit Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.

Folsom Lake

Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is located in the Sierra-Nevada foothills approximately 25 miles east of Sacramento and can be reached by both major highways and has multiple access points and entrances. The reservoir was formed by Folsom Dam, built in 1955 to retain and control the flow of the American River and contains 11,500 acres of water.

The recreation area is popular amongst tourists and locals alike and offers opportunities for hiking, bicycling, running/jogging, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, water-skiing, fishing, and boating. The park also includes Lake Natoma, which is located downstream from Folsom Lake and is popular for crew races, sailing, kayaking and many other aquatic sports.

Take a boat tour, or use your own, and catch fish such as trout, catfish, and big and small mouth bass or perch. Cyclists enjoy a 32-mile path that connects Folsom Lake with many additional Sacramento parks before reaching Old Sacramento. And over 94 miles of trails are available for exercise, and to enjoy nature and local wildlife. A number of mammals inhabit the lake area including coyotes, raccoons, ground squirrels, black-tailed deer, gray foxes, and opossums. Occasionally mountain lions and bobcats have been spotted nearby as well. Bird lovers will enjoy quails, wrens, scrub jays, hawks, eagles, gulls and other raptors who consider the area home. For guests who want a more relaxing experience, swim beaches and picnic areas, as well as food and beach equipment concessions are scattered throughout the recreation area. There is fun for the entire family, or office, at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.
